What actually drives the price

Three things set the bill: which chemistry you’re buying, how many batteries make up the bank, and whether the rest of your charging system already speaks lithium. Get all three right and a battery swap is a $300 afternoon. Get the third one wrong and you can damage a $900 battery on day one.

Flooded, AGM, and lithium aren’t interchangeable at the same price point, and they’re not always interchangeable electrically either. A flooded-to-flooded or flooded-to-AGM swap usually just works. AGM: no maintenance, moderate price

AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries seal the electrolyte in a fiberglass mat instead of leaving it as free liquid, which means no water top-offs and no risk of acid spilling if the battery tips. AGM lasts longer than flooded, typically 4 to 7 years, and handles vibration and cold better. Lithium: what the premium actually buys

The 100% usable depth of discharge is the number most owners underweight when comparing sticker prices. A 100Ah flooded battery gives you roughly 50Ah of usable capacity before you risk damaging the plates; a 100Ah lithium battery gives you closer to 90-100Ah usable. The part owners forget to budget: charger and controller compatibility

Lithium batteries need a charging profile that’s different from lead-acid, tighter voltage limits, no equalization charge, and a hard cutoff below freezing. Lithium vs. AGM over 10 years: the real math

Sticker price alone makes lithium look expensive next to AGM. Total cost of ownership tells a different story. For a 400Ah usable house battery system, a full AGM setup runs $2,000 to $2,400 to install, but AGM batteries typically need replacing every 3 to 4 years under regular use. Over 10 years, that’s roughly three replacement cycles, pushing total cost to $6,000 to $7,200, or $15 to $18 per usable amp-hour over the system’s life.

The equivalent lithium system costs more upfront, $2,400 to $2,800, but a well-maintained lithium bank commonly runs the full 10 years without needing replacement. Total 10-year cost stays at that initial $2,400 to $2,800, working out to $6 to $7 per usable amp-hour, less than half of AGM’s lifetime cost per amp-hour. Can you install RV batteries yourself?

For a same-group-size, same-chemistry swap, yes, and it’s one of the more approachable DIY jobs on an RV. Disconnect the negative terminal first to avoid a short, then the positive. Unbolt the hold-down bracket, lift out the old battery, and confirm the new one matches the group size and terminal orientation before setting it in. Reconnect positive first, then negative, and torque both terminals to spec, a loose terminal is the single most common cause of intermittent electrical gremlins on an RV.
